natural hair not formal??

Ok, so I know you all have heard the uproar over Wendy Williams saying that the lovely Viola Davis’ new natural do is well not formal enough for the red carpet. Check out the video below:

So what do you think? Frankly, natural is BEAUTIFUL!! It’s worn however, wherever, whenever!! The fact that people believe that only wearing a wig, weave or something straight sets the tone,…is quite dismaying. I’m here to say, natural hair is what you were born with! It’s what you have! To the ones who think it’s so informal, check yourself! Atleast I have something real! (And this coming from Wendy?? hmm)

share with me: what do you think? Formal or not?

~Hope you enjoyed

  1. Wendy is a dumb air head!!

  2. Funny thing about Wendy… she positively slobbered over Tamera Mowrie and Raven-Symone for ‘being natural’.. yet Viola’s hair’s not formal

  3. Wendy is….Anyway, I would love to see her without all of that weave in her hair. Natural hair is beautiful, versatile, and can be formal. Viola Davis positively shined on that red carpet.

  4. Wendy… Seriously madam you ought to be ashamed of yourself!  You’ve finally exposed what I’ve always feared; you’ve bought into the “lie”.  Are you honestly trying to suggest that socially-imposed, so-called “formal” etiquette takes precedence over ones own natural beauty??  Viola’s hair was presented with class and is absolutely gorgeous!  And to top it off; it’s HERS…  With respect Wendy: you may “think” you love yourself, but your own self-loathing and disdain for who you really are and how you really look is showing…  I sincerely hope you wake up and start believing how beautiful you are without all the nipping and tucking and stitching and weaving and stuffing and stretching and concealing… sheez I’m tired typing it all!!

  5. Wendy is entitled to her opinion just like I am entitled to mine.  I think that Viola looked beautiful, timeless, classic, and completely appropriate.  I think some people who shall remain nameless could stand to get a “make-under.”  Take off some of that makeup and some of that weave.  It’s too much and a little tranny-esque.

  6. Taking the time to actually listen to the clip, at no time did Wendy say that it was not formal enough.  She made reference to 227, which I didn’t really think was funny anyway.  Having said that, I believe everyone has a right to express their opinion.  I have been natural for 11 years and find that I don’t like when ANYONE has something negative to say about natural hair.  Nor do I knock anyone who wears wigs, weaves, relaxers, etc.  It’s so important that we uplift and not put down one another.  But it goes both ways.  What Wendy said was not cool, but let’s not fuel the flames by putting extra words in her mouth.  BTW I thought Viola Davis looked absolutely beautiful!

  7. Wendy is an A$$$$$$hole. Put that pic of Viola and Wendy together and see who stands out. nuff said.

  8. this shouldn’t even be a question.  we have to remove ourselves from letting someone else’s definition of formal, professional, etc define our natural.  natrual is just that natural and we need to begin to embrace that as appropiate for anytime and any place.  wendy, has decided wigs, weaves, and tons of makeup is a polished look, professional or red carpet appropiate, but to some others of us, this is not appealing and no one is knocking that.

  9. Wendy is wrong. Natural hair can be formal, and I’m sure we’ve all been to events with natural hair and have been accepted. She’s just trying to remain sensationalized by being controversial and rude.

  10. I just find it sad that the white woman loved and praised Viola for choosing to wear natural yet our own black sista couldn’t find the beauty in it. We have a long way to go smh

  11. hmmm. how ironic is it that a white person thought natural hair was great, but our “own” disses it?

  12. I don’t like WW so I only watched the video clip for you (LOL!). Yea, she didn’t actually say she didn’t think it was formal enough, but I thought her joke was tasteless. We should really spend anytime we have uplifting each other about our hair choices and not tearing each other down or pointing out to other cultures anything negative about our hair choices. I don’t necessarily like that red carpet look, but I thought it took great courage and sophistication to embrace it and wear it with style. If she had wanted to “formalize” her TWA she could have added a jeweled hair accessory or something, but regardless of what I think about it I support and rally behind her choice to wear it. And if I were given a platform to express something about it everything I said would be positively stated and delivered. *stepping down from soapbox*

  13. I love Viola’s hair its fresh, fun, and flirty that being said all of us natural women know how it feels to have the negative comments or jokes. Yet we rock it, that picture of Viola sends a message of confidence and breaking self-made molds of our culture. As for Wendy I stopped watching the show because there was a lot of smack talking, and gossip (stuff that makes her sound like a “hater”); there’s enough of that going around to last me a lifetime, I’m finding better things to talk about like HAIR !!!! <3 <3 <3. Who am I, or anyone else for that matter, to put my mouth on anyone? No one should be salty over this vid its kind of annoying, but what Wendy has to say is insignificant. :-)
